Maximus Decimus Aurelius
Age: 9 Years
Maximus Decimus Aurelius is the largest Mustang in our herd, weighing in at roughly 1,200 pounds.
Part draft horse, Maximus is a big, powerful gelding who has naturally earned his place as the chief and commander of the herd.
Despite his impressive size, he has an incredibly friendly personality and a mild, easygoing temperament.
His one weakness? Grass.
When Maximus spots a good patch along the trail, he’s convinced it must be snack time—even when his rider disagrees.
As long as you remind him that it’s work time, not snack time, Maximus is an amazing, dependable horse and a gentle giant who lives up to his legendary name.
Chief
Age: 7 Years
Chief is one of the co-leaders of the herd, but around here his nickname is “Grandpa.”
He has an old soul and a big bottom lip that he shakes all the time, making him look even more like an old grandpa.
Chief is Lily’s favorite horse, and she rides him bareback nearly every day while practicing her roping skills.
He’s incredibly calm and very rarely gets worried about anything.
While some horses live for running, Chief’s greatest motivation in life seems to be standing perfectly still and doing absolutely nothing.
He’s steady, dependable, and exactly the kind of horse you want in a herd.
Mario
Age: 4 Years
Mario is around four years old and came to us from a kids’ facility, where he had been trained and we expected him to be one of our extremely calm horses.
The more time we’ve spent with him, though, the more we’ve discovered there’s a pretty big personality hiding in there.
We’ve also been working hard to put some weight on him, and he’s filled out quite a bit since coming to us.
Mario makes friends easily and fits into the herd really well.
But most mornings, he still wakes up with a little bit of an attitude that we’re working through.
Like a typical four-year-old, every once in a while he decides it’s time to throw a tantrum and let everyone know exactly how he feels.
He keeps us on our toes, makes us laugh, and continues to get better the more we work with him.
Frost
Age: 4 Years
Frost is four years old and one of the tallest horses in our herd.
He’s also easily the most energetic, with enough nervous, twitchy energy to keep us working hard on helping him learn how to slow down and stay calm.
I know I’m not supposed to have favorites, but I sure do like Frost a lot.
Maybe it’s because he’s the horse I’ve had to work with and train the most.
He’s incredibly friendly with other horses and can find himself a new buddy almost immediately when he joins a herd.
And when you turn him loose in the pasture, you get to see the real Frost—running around, bucking, playing, and farting his way across the field like he owns the place.
He’s got a ton of personality, a ton of energy, and I’m excited to see what kind of horse he becomes.
Pickles
Age: 4 Years
Pickles is our Mustang pony.
At about four years old, he’s the little dude of the herd—but nobody has bothered to tell Pickles that he’s little.
He’s got plenty of spunk and isn’t afraid to challenge the bigger horses when he thinks he should be the boss.
Of course, when a lion plays with a mouse, the lion usually wins.
One little disagreement with Maximus or Chief and Pickles quickly remembers his size, settles down, and decides being friends sounds pretty good after all.
For such a little horse, Pickles has given me more rope burn than any horse we own.
We’re putting some long hours into teaching him to slow down, relax, and find his calm.
But he’s also usually one of the first horses everyone falls in love with.
He’s small, ridiculously cute, full of personality, and has enough attitude to make up for every inch he’s missing.
Forest Frank
Age: 4 Years
Forest Frank is built like a linebacker.
At roughly 1,100 pounds, he’s stout, strong, and incredibly friendly.
He can be a little shy at first, but it doesn’t take long before he’ll come up and meet you.
Frank loves making friends with other horses and settles into a herd quickly.
He’s a natural follower, easygoing with his teammates, and the kind of horse that makes the whole group better.
